The authors reviewed 111 eyes of 92 patients who underwent glaucoma surgery at seven institutions. The causative lesions comprised diabetic retinopathy (82 eyes), retinal vein occlusion (19 eyes) etc. Mitomycin C trabeculectomy was performed in 41 eyes, nonpenetrating trabeculectomy in ten eyes, and ciliodestructive procedures in 60 eyes, as initial surgery. At the final examination, 92 eyes (83%) had an intraocular pressure of 20 mmHg or below, 23 eyes (21%) had visual acuity of 0.2 or more, and 26 eyes (23%) resulted in loss of vision. Surgical failure was significantly associated with the initial presence of rubeosis iridis (p = 0.002) and peripheral anterior synechia (p = 0.021). These findings show that effective treatment for neovascular glaucoma is still controversial. LA: Japanese
