PURPOSE: To determine if the water-drinking provocative test is of value in predicting the peak of intraocular pressure (IOP) of a diurnal tension curve in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) using timolol and dorzolamide. METHODS: Thirteen patients (24 eyes) with POAG, currently using timolol and dorzolamide, were submitted to a diurnal tension curve (6-20 hours) followed by a water-drinking test. The authors evaluated the peak of IOP in both tests. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant correlation between the peak diurnal tension and the tension provoked by a water-drinking test (p = 0.003). The difference between the two peaks was 0.25 ± 4.00 mmHg, which did not differ significantly from zero. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant correlation between the maximal IOP in the diurnal tension curve and that of a water-drinking test. This may be important in selected glaucoma patients.
