Drugs and closed-angle glaucoma risk

Closed-angle glaucoma presents in predisposed patients (narrow iridocorneal angle) in response to various stimuli. Most of the attacks are of iatrogenic origin: all topical and systemic mydriatic drugs can provoke an angle-closure glaucoma attack. Dangerous active ingredients in closed-angle glaucoma are substances with anticholinergic activity (peripheral action, central action, with anticholinergic side-effects), active ingredients with sympathomimetic alpha activity (α 1, α and β with indirect effects), and active ingredients with parasympathomimetic activity (anticholinesterases). Proprietary medicines, whether or not they are included in the French dictionary Vidal®, are classified according to their administration route and their different indications. The risk of closed-angle glaucoma after administration of these drugs is noted in the items' contraindications and precautions in the summary of the product characteristics included in the marketing authorization.LA: French
