Ocular vasospasm and calcium channel blockers in glaucoma

As well as an increased intraocular pressure (IOP) vascular risk, factors such as vasospasm seem to play a major role in the pathogenesis of the glaucomatous disease. A link between vasospasm and glaucoma was shown in normal pressure and high pressure glaucoma patients. During inhalation of a potent vasodilator a subgroup of these patients showed an improvement in visual function and ocular hemodynamics. As calcium channel blockers lead to a vasodilation due to a direct relaxation of the smooth muscle cell, the effect of these substances on glaucoma patients was studied. Treatment with calcium channel blockers showed a similar improvement of visual function and had a beneficial effect on the course of the disease. This seems to be related to an improvement of ocular hemodynamics.LA: German
