OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of phacoemulsification on cataract after filtering surgery for glaucoma. METHODS: Phacoemulsification was performed on 97 eyes with cataract after filtering surgery and an intraocular lens (IOL) had been implanted. In order to avoid the primary filtering area, a temporal incision was chosen. Acuities, intraocular pressure (IOP) and complications after surgery were analyzed. RESULTS: Postoperative visual acuity was followed up for three months: > 1.0 in 25 eyes (26%), < 0.3 in nine eyes (9%); and 11 eyes (11%) had corneal edema. None had elevated IOP. The filtering blebs were not dented. CONCLUSIONS: Phacoemulsification after filtering surgery should avoid the primary filtering area, thereby improving visual acuity and controlling IOP. LA: Chinese
