New treatment paradigm for glaucoma: prostaglandin analogue update

Penna P
Drug Benefit Trends 2002; 14: 25-28,30-32

Although more prevalent in elderly persons, glaucoma is a chronic health problem that affects all populations, especially African Americans. This disease is often over-looked because no pain is associated with it and most persons are unaware of minor, progressive reductions in their visual acuity and do not seek treatment until their visual field is irrevocably impaired. Preserving the optic nerve is vital in glaucoma management, but decreasing intraocular pressure remains the cornerstone of effective therapy. Treatment compliance is key in preventing blindness from glaucoma, and the emergence of prostaglandin analogues and their effectiveness have helped simplify drug regimens, increasing patient compliance and improving outcomes.
