Glaucoma is now considered to be a multifactorial disease due to the many past studies on the pathophysiology of glaucoma. Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is hypothesized to occur due to many intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors. Experimental animal models, and basic and clinical research on glaucoma, have already clarified that high intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most important risk factor in the development of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. In recent years, it has also been demonstrated that the reduction of IOP is also the most effective treatment for patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). This paper presents the results of a long-term comparative study on the reduction of IOP and the progression of the visual field in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and NTG. The study was carried out at Niigata University Hospital for the purpose of elucidating the mechanism of optic nerve damage in glaucoma. LA: Japanese
