Corticosteroids have been used in a broad spectrum of inflammatory conditions of the eye over the past 50 years. They belong to the most frequently prescribed therapeutics in ophthalmology. Although many aspects of their beneficial and side effects still remain uncovered, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive actions represent highly valuable therapeutic effects in ocular diseases. This review is intended to summarize some relevant aspects on the use of corticosteroids, their main indications, as well as their limitations in ophthalmology.
