OBJECTIVE: To study the possible role of water channel protein aquaporin-1 (AQP1) (CHIP28) in aqueous humor secretion, outflow, and regulation in normal human eyes. METHODS: Immunohistochemical technique was used to measure the expression of AQP1 in the tissues related to aqueous humor secretion and outflow pass-way. RESULTS: AQP1 was expressed in the ciliary body's non-pigmented epithelium, the endothelium covering the trabecular meshwork, and Schlemm's canal and the iris pachywall capillary. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that AQP1 exists in the related cells to the tissue of aqueous humor secretion and outflow pass-way. This study provides a molecular biological basis to the study of aqueous humor metabolism and the possible etiology of glaucoma.LA: Chinese
