The authors prospectively evaluated the effect of the combined instillation of carteolol and latanoprost in 16 eyes of 16 patients. These patients had been using either carteolol or latanoprost without having achieved the desired reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP). The series comprised primary open-angle glaucoma (12 eyes) and normal-tension glaucoma (four eyes). Reduction of IOP below the target was obtained in four of eight carteolol-added eyes (50%) and in five of eight latanoprost-added eyes (63%). There was no difference between the two groups regarding the final IOP value after six months of combined instillation. There were no serious side-effects, except for corneal disorder in five eyes (31%). These findings show that combined instillation induces effective IOP reduction, and that this treatment results in a lesser incidence of corneal disorder than other therapeutic modalities.
