OBJECTIVE: To observe the conjunctival ultrastructure change following a single intraoperative exposure to mitomycin (MMC) in rabbit with electron microscopy. METHODS: Six white rabbits received full-thickness glaucoma filtration surgery and were divided into three groups. 0.2 mg/ml MMC was used intraoperatively in experimental group and 0.9% saline solution for blank control group. 5 mg 5-Fu was injected postoperatively as positive control group. Electron microscopic examination was taken on 14th postoperative day. RESULTS: Under electron microscope, detached conjunctival epithelial was found in all groups, and focally disrupted collagen in various spaces was found in the MMC and 5-Fu treated groups. CONCLUSION: A single intraoperative application of MMC may increase the success rate of glaucoma surgery in rabbit. LA: Chinese
