Nucci et al. (840) used microdialysis to directly measure glutamate levels in the rat retina during acutely elevated intraocular pressure. The pressure chosen (120 mmHg for 45 minutes) was one that actually causes retinal ischemia, and thus is not a glaucoma model. Also, when all animals were grouped together, the mean rise in glutamate was not significantly different from baseline. Nonetheless, the use of microdialysis is promising, and should lead to further in situ studies of the role of glutamate in more traditional glaucoma models.
