Sa and Kee (916) have conducted a small, but interesting retrospective study of the effect of performing a temporal clear cornea phacoemulsification upon the IOP control and need for medications in patients with a previous placement of an Ahmed Glaucoma Implant. They found that performance of cataract surgery did cause a hypertensive phase in 6 of the 13 patients at about 1 month after surgery, requiring additional medication. However, the hypertensive phase was controlled by additional medication at 1-6 months and resolved by 1 year, and no patient failed control. These results parallel those which have been reported for clear cornea phacoemulsification in patients with pre-existing filtering blebs.
