We treated 5 eyes of refractory glaucoma by inserting Ahmed glaucoma valve. The series comprised neovascular glaucoma 3 eyes, uveitis-associated glaucoma 1 eye, and posttraumatic glaucoma 1 eye. Multiple trabeculectomy had bee performed in 4 eyes. Preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) averaged 39.4 ± 7.4 mmHg. One year after surgery, 2 eyes had IOP of 21 mmHg or below with one topical medication. The corneal endothelial population had decreased to less than 50% one year after surgery. The findings show that use of Ahmed glaucoma valve may increase of the possibility of IOP control in refractile glaucoma. Due precaution is necessary in its use because of associated damage to the corneal endothelium. LA: Japanese
