Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (n-AION), optic neuritis (ON) and glaucoma are the most common causes of atrophic optic nerve head. Although patient profiles and history are usually sufficient for distinguishing between these three disorders, there are instances in which definitive diagnosis is difficult. Recently developed optical imaging techniques allow quantitative and objective evaluation of the optic disc and retinal nerve fiber layer. This article describes results for n-AION and ON cases that were obtained when the subjects were examined using a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (Heidelberg retina tomograph) and by scanning laser polarimetry. In the future, these instruments may provide valuable information in n-AION and ON cases. LA: Japanese
