AIM: To explore the application of trabeculectomy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in the anti-glaucoma surgery, and to evaluate its clinical effects. METHODS: Trabeculectomy was performed with intra-and post-operative local usage of 5-FU in 89 eyes, including 19 eyes of acute close-angle glaucoma, 25 eyes of chronic close-angle glaucoma, 25 eyes of primary open-angle glaucoma, 7 eyes of neovascular glaucoma, 4 eyes of uveitis-induced secondary glaucoma, 5 eyes with failed filtering surgery and 4 eyes of IOL-induced glaucoma. Removable suture was used in 30 eyes with scleral lamella among these eyes. RESULTS: The follow-up was 7-33 mo (mean 2 mo). Visual acuities remained unchanged or improved in 70 eyes (79%) and decreased in 19 eyes (21%) at 6 mo. Functional filtering bleb appeared in 78 eyes (88%) and non-functional filtering bleb in 11 eyes (12%). After 6mo, intraocular pressure (IOP) was lower than 10 mmHg in 15 eyes, 10-21 mmHg in 62 eyes, and higher than 21 mmHg in 12 eyes, which were mainly refractory glaucoma. The effective rate of IOP control was 87%, and the severe complication was macular degeneration. CONCLUSION: trabeculectomy with 5-FU can effectively reduce the IOP of glaucoma eyes, with few complications and good therapeutic effects. LA: Chinese
