AIM: To investigate the prevention and treatment of malignant glaucoma. METHODS: The clinical data collected in our hospital from March 2001 to June 2006 were analyzed retrospectively. Fifteen cases (17 eyes) of malignant glaucoma were treated with one or more methods as follows: synthetically medical therapy, aspiration of the anterior vitreous, reconstruction of anterior chamber, extraction of the lens, implantation of posterior chamber intraocular lens, hyaloidotomy, anterior vitreotomy and filtering surgery. RESULTS: The follow-up was 1-63 months (mean 17.21 months). The mean intraocular pressure was (15.15) mmHg postoperatively. The visual outcome was satisfying. No other complications were observed. CONCLUSION: The surgery should be done as earlier as possible if the effect of medical therapy is not prominent. Simple surgery such as aspiration of the anterior vitreous or/and reconstruction of the anterior chamber can relieve malignant glaucoma effectively at early stage, and the combination of several procedures is effective for various malignant glaucoma.
