The authors reviewed 331 patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension regarding their follow-up visits for one year or longer after initial diagnosis. Of this series, 188 patients (56.8%) visited the authors at an interval of one to two months, 41 (12.4%) at an interval of three to six months, 31 (9.4%) at an interval of six to 12 months, and 47 (14.2%) discontinued follow-up visits. Twenty-four patients (7.2%) failed to show up after the initial diagnosis. Regular follow-up visits were made by patients when (1) their stay in the outpatient clinic was short (p < 0.02), (2) they were aged 60 years or over (p < 0.001), or (3) they were under medication or had undergone previous surgery (p < 0.001). These findings show that continued treatment is a major motivation for follow-up visits. However, out of 93 patients who did not receive medications, 54 (58%) visited the authors at an interval of one to two months. LA: Japanese
