Periventricular leukomalacia: an intracranial cause ofpseudoglaucomatous cupping

Brodsky MC
Archives of Ophthalmology 2001; 119: 626-627

This is a report of a 13-year-old boy who had large optic cups, diffuse nerve fiber layer loss, and a visual field defect. The boy had been born two months prematurely. His gait had always been abnormal and he seemed to have particular difficulty in running. The diagnosis of periventricular leukomalacia was made on magnetic resonance imaging. The disease results from hypoxic/ischemic injury to periventricular white matter. This rare occurrence should be added to the differential diagnosis of glaucomatous disease.
