AIM: To explore the effects of trabeculectomy with biotic amniotic membrane (AMT) in the treatment of refractory glaucoma. METHODS: Thirty-six eyes of 36 patients with refractory glaucoma underwent trabeculectomy with AMT and releasable sutures. The visual acuity, intraocular pressure (OP), anterior chamber and filtering blebs were observed. RESULTS: The postoperative IOP significantly declined compared with preoperative value (P < 0. 05) ; All maintained functional filtering blebs; and the visual acuity kept invariable or improved. The postoperative complications mainly involved the shallow anterior chamber and ocular hypotension. CONCLUSION: Application of AMT in trabeculectomy can prevent the filtering blebs from scar formation and the complications are rare, it is a useful and safe method for treating refractory glaucoma.
