Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by structural changes of the optic nerve, which may eventually develop into irreversible visual functional defects. Therefore, it needs early detection. Optical coherence tomography as a method of quantitative measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness may shows promise in early detection of glaucoma. We reviewed recent studies about its diagnosis value in detecting glaucoma. Many studies revealed that retinal nerve fiber layer thickness changes were obvious in glaucoma with visual field defects and were well related in locations and in severity. However, more longitudinal studies were required to assess its potential in detecting preperimetric glaucoma and following-up of glaucomatous patients. LA: Chinese
