AIM: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) combined with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation in patients with high intraocular pressure. METHODS: Eighteen cases (18 eyes) with glaucoma, ocular hypertension and cataract underwent triple procedures (small incision non-phacoemulsification cataract extraction, IOL implantation trabeculectomy), and visual acuity, intraocular pressure and complications were analyzed after operation. RESULTS: Postoperative intraocular pressure decreased significantly compared with that of the postoperative which was treated with ocular hypotensive agents, varying from 11-22mmHg besides 1 cases 26mmHg. Postoperative visual acuities were improved at different degrees. The rate and the degree of seriousness of the postoperative complication caused by triple operation were not higher than those cause by trabeculectomy or ECCE and PC-IOL implantation. CONCLUSION: Triple procedures (small incision non-phacoemulsification cataract extraction, IOL implantation trabeculectomy) performed in ocular hypertension patients may cause more complications, yet it is effective and safe for the treatment of cataract patients associated with glaucoma.
