Background and Objectives: The study proposed to evaluate the action of retrobulbar block (RB) combined, or not, with stellate ganglion block (SGB) in patients with chronic ocular pain secondary to glaucoma regarding pain relief, maintenance of a proper ocular pressure and visual field. Methods: 54 patients were randomly located to one of three groups (n = 18) to evaluate pain, visual field and ocular pressure. All groups were submitted to RB with either saline or 30 mcg clonidine+70mg lidocaine; and to SGB with either saline or 30 mcg clonidine+10mg dexamethasone+ 20mg lidocaine. Group 1 received the RB drugs and saline in the SGB. Group 2 received saline in the RB and the drugs in the SGB. Group 3 received drugs at both RB and SGB. All groups were submitted to three consecutive weekly procedures. Patients were evaluated for pain, visual field and ocular pressure prior, at the 4(th)and 16(th) week. Results: All groups showed pain relieve until the 4(th) week evaluation. However only group 3 displayed analgesia until the 16(th) week (p < 0.05). All groups were similar regarding visual field and ocular pressure. Conclusions: The combination of SGB and RB with clonidine, lidocaine and dexamethasone resulted in at least 16 weeks of analgesia without compromising the controlled ocular pressure. The absence of any improvement in the visual field could be secondary to advanced disease and already compromised visual field in the population selected.
