We studied retrospectively the results of performing trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) in 17 patients (22 eyes) with medically uncontrolled neovascular glaucoma complicated by diabetic retinopathy. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was considered to be controlled successfully when it measured less than 21 mmHg without systemic medication. After surgery, IOP was controlled in 18 eyes (82%) and in 7 eyes (32%) it was controlled without topical medications. Final visual acuity was the same or improved in 20 eyes (91%), was 0.02 or better in all cases, and was 0.1 or better in 13 eyes (59%). These results indicate that trabeculectomy with MMC is effective in treating medically uncontrolled neovascular glaucoma complicated by diabetic retinopathy.LA: Japanese
