The reviewed 61 eyes of 50 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent trabeculectomy with intraoperative mitomycin C. Control of intraocular pressure (IOP) under 15 mmHg without medication was obtained in 60.0% of eyes 72 months after surgery. Eyes with IOP below 15 mmHg one week after surgery showed significantly better long-term IOP control (p = 0.034). Analysis using the Cox proportional hazard model showed the application time of mitomycin C to be a significant factor for a good long-term outcome (p = 0.0363). These findings show the importance of the sufficient intraoperative application of mitomycin C and IOP control below 15 mmHg during the early postoperative period for achieving long-term success.
