PURPOSE: To evaluate the surgical results of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) for neovascular glaucoma (NVG) due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) at the Numazu Municipal Hospital. METHODS: The authors evaluated 17 eyes of 15 patients (mean age, 59.4 years) who underwent trabeculectomy for NVG due to DR between January 1997 and April 1999 and were followed-up for at least six months (mean follow-up, 15 months). They defined good final results as a postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) of less than 21 mmHg with or without topical medication. RESULTS: The authors performed trabeculectomy an average of 1.4 times per eye. The mean preoperative IOP was 35 ± 8.51 mmHg and the mean postoperative IOP 19 ± 12.57 mmHg. IOP was well-controlled in 13 (77%) of the eyes. All eyes with ineffective control of IOP had peripheral anterior synechia over more than half the circumference, hyphema during the intraoperative period, and this occurred in patients who had had diabetes mellitus for more than 11 years. CONCLUSIONS: The results in this study indicate that trabeculectomy with MMC is an effective means to manage NVG due to DR. LA: Japanese
