Comparative study of the threshold variability between blue-on-yellow perimetry and white-on-white perimetry in normal subjects

AIM: To compare the short-term fluctuation and long-term fluctuation and intersubject variability of threshold about blue-on-yellow (B/Y) automated perimetry with white-on-white (W/W) automated perimetry in normal subjects, and to evaluate threshold fluctuation of B/Y perimetry. METHODS: B/Y and W/W perimetry in Octopus101 perimetry were used to examine the visual fields of 22 normal subject (22 eyes) from 22 to 29 years old. Short-term and long-term fluctuation and intersubject variability of threshold in the two perimetries were examined and analyzed. RESULTS: Short-term fluctuation (1.81 ± 0.28dB) and long-term fluctuation of mean threshold (2.64 ± 1.25dB) for B/Y perimetry were significantly greater than that for W/W perimetry (1.34 ± 0.21dB, t = 6.60, P < 0.001; 1.37 ± 0.78dB, t = 4.22, P < 0.001). Intersubjects variability of threshold for B/Y perimetry was significantly greater than that for W/W perimetry (F = 39.44,41.24,75.37,90.67; P < 0.0001). Long-term fluctuation of threshold in 1-59 test location increased as a function of eccentricity for B/Y perimetry, showing positive correlation (r = 0.4613, P < 0.05) Long-term fluctuation of superior quadrant (29 test locations) for B/Y perimetry was significantly greater than that of inferior quadrant (29 test locations) (t = 3.68, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Threshold variability for the B/Y perimetry is greater than that for the W/W perimetry, so there is larger normal range of reference values when evaluating result for B/Y perimetry, location and extent of threshold variability is considered. Conventional W/W perimetry should remain for diagnosis and longitudinal follow-up of glaucoma patients. LA: Chinese
