AIM: To evaluate and compare long-term effect of non-penetrating trabecular surgery (NPTS) with sodium hyaluronate implantation and modified trabeculectomy in patients with primary open angle glaucoma. METHODS: There were totally 15 cases (30 eyes) with primary open angle glaucoma. One eye of the patient underwent NPTS with sodium hyaluronate implantation (observation group), and the other eye of the patient was performed modified trabeculectomy (control group). Patients were followed up for a mean period of 24 months, and postoperative conditions were observed. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in postoperative vision, intraocular pressure, filtering bleb, anterior chamber angle, and visual field between two groups (P > 0. 05). Furthermore, patients who underwent NPTS had fewer complications. CONCLUSION: NPTS with sodium hyaluronate acid implantation has similar effect to that of modified trabeculectomy, but NPTS with sodium hyaluronate implantation is safer and more effective and has fewer postoperative complications.
