The role of peripapillary atrophy in the management of glaucoma remains intriguing. The advantage of peripapillary atrophy over disk hemorrhages is that peripapillary atrophy is always present. Jonas (53) presents a review on peripapillary atrophy in which he states that it is "among several morphologic variables to detect glaucomatous abnormalities. It is a variable of the second order." It is also useful for the differentiation of various types of glaucoma or differentiation from AION.
