Understanding retinal ganglion cell (RGC) injury in glaucoma is fundamental to the development of preservation strategies. Morquette and Di Polo (1626) review the major cellular compartments of the RGC, namely the soma, axon, dendrites and synaptic connections. This well-written article is highly relevant to glaucoma researchers and glaucoma specialists interested in the structure and function of RGCs. Dendrites are nicely highlighted in this article, with a clear description of these fine structures responsible for signal transmission at synaptic contact points. The dynamic nature of dendrites is emphasized, with a discussion of their changes during development and in neurologic disorders. Dendritic injury in the eye of several glaucoma models is reviewed, in addition to changes observed in the lateral geniculate nucleus in

Attention to the dendrite, nerveterminal and target in the brain is needed to provide a more complete framework with which to approach glaucoma therapies to restore the RGC soma and axon
primate glaucoma. The authors remind us that as we develop therapeutics to restore the RGC soma and axon, attention to the dendrite, nerve terminal and target in the brain is needed to provide a more complete framework with which to approach glaucoma therapies. Recent in vivo capacity to image subtle structural brain changes (1) presents a novel opportunity to capture dendrite remodelling in studies of glaucomatous disease and recovery.
