Neurohormonal control of aqueous humor secretion and drainage has long been suspected but has not been definitively shown. Previous investigators have found serotonin receptors in ciliary body epithelium which.implicates a potential role in aqueous drainage.

Sharif et al. (692) found that human trabecular meshwork cells express both 5HT2a and 5HT2b receptors. By measuring phosphoinositide turnover and intracellular calcium release, they found that various agonists of these serotonin receptors were functionally significant in 83% of donor cell lines tested (20 out of 24 cell lines). Through a methodical use of selective receptor antagonists, the authors showed that effects are mediated by the 5HT2a receptor. Subsequent studies showed that these serotonin analogues lowered IOP in cynomolgus monkeys.

These results further support the possibility of neurohormonal control of aqueous humor dynamics and indicate 5HT receptors as possible treatment targets.
