I was awarded a scholarship by the EGS. My fellowship program began in January 2001 and ended in December 2002. I spent these two years with Professor G.K. Krieglstein at the University Eye Hospital in Cologne, Germany.
During my fellowship, I was involved in both clinical (including surgery) and research work.
I participated in two DOG meetings (German Society of Ophthalmology). In 2001, I presented a publication, "Ultrasound Biomicroscopy Shows Outflow Pathways after Deep Sclerectomy with Collagen Implant". In 2003, I was a co-author in a publication called "Analyzation of the Nerve Fiber Layer Using the GDx System Requires Highly Experienced Observers".
In November 2002 my article "Ultrasound Biomicroscopy Images: Long-Term Results after Deep Sclerectomy with Collagen Implant" was published in Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimentation Ophthalmology.
In 2002, I participated at the ARVO meeting in Florida with a poster written in collaboration with colleagues from the University Eye Hospital in Cologne.
During my fellowship, I defended a German doctoral dissertation on "Mechanisms of Filtration in Non-Penetrating Glaucoma Surgery". This dissertation will help me obtain a habilitation in Bulgaria.
During my fellowship, I gathered data for a clinical project with patients with PEX glaucoma treated with Xalatan. I will present it at the DOG meeting in 2005 at a joint Bulgarian-German session. I also collected data for a study on patients with myopia and normal pressure glaucoma in which I will trace visual field changes. I plan to present this work at future glaucoma congresses.
I was invited by Nova Science Publishing House to write an article for their book, "Progress in Glaucoma Research". I sent the script in January and it has already been approved. The book is due to be published at the end of July 2004.
I would like to thank the Executive Committee of the EGS, and especially Prof. Hitchings, Prof. Thygesen, and Prof. Traverso. I would like to express my deep gratitude to Prof. Krieglstein for having made my fellowship so useful and pleasant. My fellowship at the University Eye Hospital in Germany gave me confidence as a glaucoma specialist.
