Keith Martin has accepted the position of WGA treasurer. Keith is a highly respected clinician-scientist from Cambridge, England. He will serve a two-year term as treasurer, which will place him on the Executive Committee of the Association. Keith has been extremely active within WGA for many years, having served with distinction on the Associate Advisory Board. He is also responsible for bringing Project Forum, the online communication system used in our consensus meetings, to the WGA. Keith has made outstanding presentations at prior World Congress Meetings and will play an important role at the next such Congress in Boston.
Keith takes over the treasurer position at a time when non-profit associations are facing the greatest challenges in decades. In addition to slumping world markets which impact everyone, there are unique obstacles to physicians, researchers, educators and health care organizations throughout the world which have the potential to impact the WGA. Keith was the unanimous choice of the Executive Office and the Board of Governors for this position. We are indeed lucky to have someone with his capability and dedication to help in charting a course during these difficult times. Keith succeeds Erik Greve who served as treasurer through 2008 and is assisting Keith during the ongoing financial transition period. The WGA is also fortunate to have someone with Erik's energy and commitment available for all to call upon during this transition.
Plans for the World Glaucoma Congress are coming along very nicely. Lou Pasquale and David Greenfield, along with the remainder of the local organizing committee, have planned several exciting events. The host American Glaucoma Society will be presenting highlights from their March, 2009 meeting during a ninety-minute session on the morning of Wednesday, July 8th, the first day of the Congress. Program Committee chairs Dennis Lam, Jeff Liebmann, Choka Melamed and Joel Schuman have organized a wonderful program incorporating several hundred invited speakers. Boston, 2009 promises to be the most comprehensive World Congress to date. The collaboration with leaders of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery including Society President Brad Shingleton, a Bostonian, makes this Congress unique. We look forward to welcoming you to Boston.
