The WGC Social Program

Boston is no doubt one of the jewels of American cities. It also is one of the oldest. A stroll through Boston or the Harvard premises is a delight to even the most spoiled globe-trotter. The WGC organizes an attractive program for accompanying persons including a.o. the Welcome Reception and the Farewell Reception as well as the 'Complete tour of Boston: 350 years in a day' and the 'Tour of Newport and its Mansions'.
The participants will have a chance to meet each other during the following festive occasions:

  • The Welcome Reception on Wednesday, July 8, immediately after the Opening Session, which will be held in the Hynes Convention Center.
  • The WGA looks forward to meet you all not only during the scientific sessions, but also at these relaxed occasions especially organized for you.
  • The Gala Dinner on Friday evening, July 10 in the beautiful and dignified Boston Public Library, which is the largest municipal library in the United States. The WGC has a reputation for organizing a grand and entertaining gala evening. You will enjoy musicians from the Boston Symphony, gospel singers, a typical American dance band, and … karaoke, started by the faculty and picked up by everyone. What delight!
  • The Farewell Reception on Saturday, July 11 will be held on the top-floor of the Hynes Convention Center with a beautiful view over the city. Enjoy light drinks and some snacks while saying goodbye to your friends and colleagues.
  • The Presidents Dinner is for all presidents of the WGA member Glaucoma Societies and the WGC Faculty and promises to be a unique gathering in the Harvard Club. This is on Thursday evening, July 9 and by invitation only.

Beautiful green Boston

Walk the streets of Boston and history is around you everywhere. From museums to pro sports, from fresh seafood to Italian cuisine, Boston has something for everyone. It's also a great place to start your exploration of New England.
One of America's oldest cities (founded in 1630), Boston remains one of its most European in feel. Boston's reputation as a walking city relies on the creation of one of America's first historic walking tours: the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail Foundation continues to work to preserve this perfect introduction to Colonial Revolutionary Boston and links the Public Garden, the book shops and other stores of Harvard Square.
Experience art from Ancient Egyptian to Contemporary at The Museum of Fine Arts or The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Children will enjoy exhibits focused on arts, culture and science at The Children's Museum. And the Museum of Science offers hands-on exhibits, laser shows and IMAX films that are fun for all ages.

In the theatre district, you'll find the Opera House, Colonial Theatre, Wilbur Theatre, Shubert Theatre and the Wang Center for the Performing Arts. Outside of the theatre district, you'll also find The Huntington, The American Repertory Theatre, The Lyric Stage, The Calderwood Pavilion and the Emerson Majestic Theatre.

Dance performances remain a cultural strong point in Boston and the Boston Ballet, known for its classical and modern works, is one of the best in the world.
The world renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, which plays lighter, more popular classics and show tunes, perform at Symphony Hall.

Fans are especially fond of Fenway Park, home of the 2004 and 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox.
