Measured with 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging, the optic nerve
subarachnoid space was narrower in normal-pressure glaucoma patients
than in high-pressure glaucoma patients, suggesting a lower orbital
cerebrospinal fluid pressure in normal-pressure glaucoma. (Ningli
Wang, et al., Beijing, P.R. China)
This study revealed that the SLCCs of the WERI-Rb1 line expressed
embryonic stem cell- and retinal stem cell-related genes and they could
be further induced into retinal neurons through blockade of endogenous
Wnt and Nodal signals. These findings utilized a strategy of the artificial
change of cancer stem cell fate by transcription factors and may provide
a new insight for cell replacement strategy of retinal degeneration
disease. (Huiling Hu, Fei Deng, Mengfei Chen, Jian Ge Kaohsiung, Guangzhou,
P.R. China)
By direct DNA sequencing the CYP1B1 Gene in 238 cases of Primary
Infantile Glaucoma, investigating the genotype-phenotype relationship,
and reviewing the operative effect, the mutant CYP1B1 gene was found
to be partly related with the infantile glaucoma (17.2%). The carriers
of the mutant CYP1B1 gene may be at earlier onset and with poorer corneal
transparency. Mutant CYP1B1 gene is the protective factor for operative
effect, and the patients with it have higher success rate and longer
successful time. (Xueli Chen, Yuhong Chen, Xinghuai Sun, Shanghai, P.R.
China)
Polymorphisms of the α2B-, α2C- and β1-adrenergic receptor gene
influenced untreated intraocular pressure levels in diurnal intraocular
pressure curves of Japanese patients with normal-tension glaucoma. However,
no polymorphisms were associated with IOP range in diurnal intraocular
pressure curves. (Yanlin Gao, et al., Kanazawa, Japan)
With diffusion tensor MRI, it was found that the optic tract and
optic radiation were injured in primary open angle glaucoma patients,
and they varied consistently with clinical severity of glaucoma(damage
to the optic disk and loss of visual function. (Chen, et al., Wuhan,
P.R. China)
Compared to Wide Type(WT) mice, constitutive overexpression of Neuroglobin(Ngb)
in transgenic mice prevented Retinal Ganglion Cell(RGC) damage induced
by chronic IOP elevation for 1,4,8 weeks. It suggest that Ngb protects
RGC , at least in part, through reducing reactive oxidative products
and preserving the function of mitochondria. (Xin Wei, Xiaomin Chen,
Xuyang Liu, D.Chen, Chengdu, P.R. China)
The prevalence of sleep disturbances was higher in patients with
POAG and PACG than in controls. This study indicates that glaucoma not
only damage the visual function, but also the non-image-forming function
like circadian rhythms. (Ye Zhan, Huaizhou Wang, Ningli Wang, Beijing,
P.R. China)
Mitochondria targeted peptide MTP-131 could protect against oxidative
stress and alleviate apoptosis in RGC-5 cells, which might have potential
neuroprotective effect in POAG. (Min Chen, Bingqian Liu, Yujing Bai,
Jian Ge, Guangzhou, P.R. China)
This study was performed to determine if the viruses are possible
etiologic agents in Posner-Schlossman syndrome (PSS). The specimens
from aqueous humor and peripheral blood were assayed to detect HSV,
VZV, EB, AD, RV and CMV by PCR, IFT and ELISA. The results showed that
CMV DNA positive ration was 30% in aqueous humor, which was higher than
other viruses. CMV infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis
of PSS, and antiviral therapy could be effective. (Xiaolei Wang, et
al., Shanghai, P.R. China)
By proteomic analysis, immunofluorescence, immunoblotting and Prussian
blue staining, we demonstrated that non-iron-chelated hemoglobin was
observed to be highly expressed in avascular human lens capsule, pseudoexfoliation
(PXF) material and aqueous humor. Over a decade ago, several groups
suggested a low molecular weight protein was associated with PXF glaucoma.
We have identified this molecule to be hemoglobin. (Xiangmei Kong, Miguel
Risco, Richard K. Lee, Shanghai, P.R. China)
