The WGC has always enjoyed a program committee of leading glaucoma specialists from all corners of the globe. It is due to their vision and hard work that the WGC program has enjoyed a reputation of having the highest possible scientific standard. So when a new program committee is chosen, it befalls on them the responsibility to follow in the footsteps of such an illustrious group of glaucoma luminaries and to reach even brighter horizons. How do you ago about achieving that? For the 2013 WGC, the committee, was carefully selected to reflect many aspects that are indeed features of the WGA as a whole. It is comprised of a group of scientists and clinicians that complement each other not just from a geographic standpoint, but more importantly with their individual expertise. So the knowledge of the whole wide spectrum in the art and science of glaucoma, starting from basic research to research in surgical innovations, becomes well represented.
The committee has focused on many aspects prioritized the identification of new talent. In many cases a new member to the faculty of WGC might not have the long track record of a seasoned speaker, but the committee believes that only through the introduction of these individuals to our scientific society will we be able to move forward. For the last two years the committee has been seeking and reaching out to young researchers who have been actively publishing and contributing to scientific gatherings. The committee has also embraced technology to the fullest. It is benefitting from new innovations in communications that will make the most interactive of all. We encourage the sharing of ideas and expression of opinions to the maximum and would like to provide the tools by which the audience can be inspired to become dynamic and proactive in the deliberations of this main event in our subspecialty. One aspect that the committee will strive to maintain is the balance between what is the future of our research in the form of basic science and new frontiers and what is now applicable and pragmatic, so that the participant will benefit from in-depth understanding about what is the potential future and directions of new research, but at the same time go home having acquired new knowledge and skills that she/he can immediately begin to practice and apply. The program chairs, Jonathan Crowston, Neeru Gupta, Fabian Lerner and I, would like to offer our deepest thanks to previous WGC program committee chairs and members. Only through their efforts cab we can now build such a well-structured and successful program. To the WGC participants and attendees we promise only the best. Looking forward to renewing our friendships and creating new ones in the lovely city of Vancouver.
