In an epidemiological study from South India, of those identified
with POAG, 93.0% had not been previously diagnosed. A large proportion
of persons who require eye care are currently not utilizing existing
eye care services. Strategies to improve the uptake of services are
required to reduce the burden of blindness due to glaucoma in India.
(R. Ramakrishnan, Tirunelveli, India)
In a study, angle-closure glaucoma constituted 45.9% of all primary
adult glaucomas seen in India. In India asymptomatic chronic angle-closure
glaucoma mimicking POAG is common. Provocative testing may play a supportive
role in asymptomatic occludable angles. (Ramanjit Sihota, New Delhi,
India)
A good stereoscopic disc picture may prove to be the best mode of
disc evaluation since there are many qualitative features that are missed
on imaging. Training ophthalmologists to look at the optic disc critically
and pick up subtle signs of glaucoma may be more useful than trying
to decipher automated image analyses tools with their inherent limitations.
(S.S. Pandav, Subiaco, Australia)
In a study from Central India, the ratio of open-angle glaucoma
to angle-closure glaucoma was 7.7:1 (1.93% (95%CI: 1.64, 2.22) to 0.24%
(95%CI: 0.14, 0.34)). Using the ISGEO criteria, glaucoma prevalence
was 2.8% (95%CI: 2.3, 3.3) with a less clear association with older
age. (Vinay Nangia, Nagpur, India)
The Aurolab Aqueous Drainage Implant (AADI) is a good, low cost,
effective glaucoma drainage device which is a prototype of the Baerveldt
design. Preliminary results are good and issues of hypotony have been
minimized by tightly ligating the tube after implantation. It is easy
to implant and intraoperative complications were few. The results at
six months in terms of IOP control and safety were comparable to the
Baerveldt implant. The low cost is an added advantage and has made it
accessible to people who could not have afforded a drainage device otherwise.
