AIM: To study the effect of acathopanax senticosus (AS) and nimodipine on content of MDA/SOD/GSH of retina in rabbit eyes with experimental acute glaucoma. METHODS: The rabbit models of experimental acute glaucoma were prepared by perfusing balanced salt solution into anterior chambers. The dynamic curves of MDA/SOD/GSH were detected. According to the results, The rabbits were divided into AS group, nimodipine group, united group and saline group. The medcine was injected respectively into veins of the rabbits before the end of perfusion. MDA, SOD and GSH were examined at 24h post-perfusion. RESULTS: Compared with saline group, the content of GSH was increased significantly from 54.360 585mg/gprot to 60.35425mg/gprot in AS group, 58.54853mg/gprot in nimodipine group, 61.938 814mg/gprot in united group (P < 0.01). So is the activity of SOD, from 50.73580U/mgprot to 69.89889, 61.41669 and 74.49154u/mgprot (P < 0.01). whereas the content of MDA was decreased from 9.009276nmol/mgprot to 7.01544, 8.02185, 6.561228nmol/mgprot (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Free radical concentration in experimental glaucomatous eye was elevated significantly. Both AS and nimodipine could inhibit the free radical and enhanced anti-oxidative activity induced by experimental glaucoma in rabbit. Two drugs may be applied to the prevention of optic nerve in glaucoma. LA: Chinese
