Iatrogenic limbal stem cell deficiency: when glaucoma management contributes to corneal disease

Schwartz GS; Holland EJ
Journal of Glaucoma 2001; 10: 443-445

The authors describe corneal disease in patients receiving glaucoma treatment. Iatrogenic limbal stem cell deficiency is a chronic progressive epitheliopathy starting in the superior peripheral cornea and progressing centrally. All eyes had prior surgery involving the superior corneoscleral limbus. The authors hypothesize that direct trauma to the limbus and chronic use of topical medication are causative. They also predict that we will see this disease later after the use of mitomycin C.
