Biological amnion transplantation combined with trabeculectomy for re-operation of glaucoma

AIM: To observe the effect and security of biological amnion used in the re-operation of glaucoma. METHODS: Trabeculectomy combined with biological amnion transplantation were performed in 31 cases (33 eyes) who underwent re-operation of glaucoma. After the operation patients were followed up for one year. The visual acuity, filtering blebs, anterior chamber depth, intraocular pressure (IOP) and complications were examined and recorded. RESULTS: During the period of follow-up, IOP fell from preoperative (33.18 ± 5.7) mmHg down to postoperative (15.23 ±3.3)mmHg, and there was statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). At one year after the operation, those whose IOP was controlled occupied 94% (31/33); 27 eyes (82%) maintained functional filtering blebs. Main complications were ocular hypotension (6 eyes) and shallow anterior chamber (4 eyes). CONCLUSION: Biological amnion transplantation combined with trabeculectomy can reduce scar formation, and improve the success rate remarkably. It is safe and effective to be used in the re-operation of glaucoma. LA: Chinese
