The effect of age on selective laser trabeculoplasty as secondary therapy

Background: To examine the effect of age on Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), as secondary therapy, to decrease intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma. Study: Retrospective chart review was performed on 741 of 2056 eyes from a consecutive case series of patients treated with SLT over 5 years. Eyes were grouped by ages of less than 50, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80 or greater. Two-tailed paired t-test was used to compare maximum pre- and post-procedure IOP among the subgroups. Results: Mean follow-up was 357 days. IOP decreased by 27% in less than 50, 18% in 50-59, 14% in 60-69, 23% in 70-79, and 25% in 80 and above. Results were significant with p<0.01. Conclusion: In this series, SLT significantly lowered IOP in eyes of all ages as secondary therapy; there appeared to be no significant relationship between age and post-SLT reduction of IOP, in patients with glaucoma.
