An interesting discussion is reported on the effect of latanoprost on herpetic keratitis. The discussion concerns one study in human patients and one in an experimental model of herpes simplex keratitis in rabbits. The corresponding author feels that a causal effect in the study on three human patients has not been established. He also warns for the interspecies differences with regard to the rabbit study. A second observed problem is that the vehicle, benzalkonium chloride, may also have been the cause of the disease. The answers of the two sets of authors are worthwhile reading for everyone who is treating patients with latanoprost. Of course they disagree with the corresponding author.
