AIM: To evaluate the clinical effects of phacoemulsification (phaco) with foldable intraocular tens (IOL) implantation in the treatment of acute angle-closure glaucoma. METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients 23 eyes were included in this study with acute angle-closure glaucoma and cataract, and phacoemulsification with foldable IOL implantation were performed. Visual acuity and intraocular pressure(IOP) were recorded pre- and postoperatively. The pre- and postoperative changes about the anterior chamber depth (ACD) and angle opening distance (AOD(500)) were detected by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). RESULTS: The mean visual acuity was increased from 4.16(plus or minus)0.38 of preoperative to 4.75(plus or minus)0.10 of postoperative, and IOP was reduced from 48.65(plus or minus)7.34mmHg to 16.65 (plus or minus) 1.97mmHg. ACD of pre- and postoperation were 1.35(plus or minus) 0.04mm and 3.51(plus or minus)0.07mm, AOD (500) of pre-and postoperation were 225.09(plus or minus)12.43pm and 511.18(plus or minus)12.20pm respectively, there was significant difference (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification with foldable IOL implantation is a safe and effective method to treat acute angle-closure glaucoma.LA: Chinese
