Ehrich et al. (82) report on the interactions between the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-1, the anti-inflammatory steroid, Dexamethasone, and elevated hydrostatic pressure on the expression of several matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) by porcine trabecular matrix (TM) cells. IL-1 and elevated hydrostatic pressure both increase expression of several MMPs and TIMPs. Dexamethasone modestly depresses some of the pressure effects. The effects of these agents on MMP-3 are the most pronounced, suggesting a relationship between extracellular matrix turnover involving the proteoglycans, which are thought by some to contribute significantly to the aqueous humor outflow resistance.

Although a few of the results disagree with some previous studies, most of the important changes reported are compatible with these authors' previous studies and with the findings of others. Details of the studies are clearly presented with consideration to statistical significance and the studies appear to have been conducted with care. Overall, they contribute interesting information that may be of use in understanding the regulation of aqueous humor outflow.
