Bagga et al. (907) evaluated the asymmetry within the macular region, in order to determine the potential utility of this technique in the detection of glaucoma. This study was conducted using 20 eyes from 20 glaucoma patients with hemifield visual field defects and in 20 normal control eyes. They used the StratusOCT to measure the thickness of the macula in all glaucoma patients and control subjects temporal to the fovea and compared the mean macular thickness between the superior and inferior regions of the macula in one eye.The study demonstrated that the normal eyes showed no difference in macular thickness between the superior and inferior regions of the macula, while glaucomatous eyes with hemifield defects showed relatively thinner macular thickness measurements in the region corresponding to the location of the field defect. For most glaucomatous eyes (80-85%), the measurement of macular asymmetry was outside of the 95% confidence limits determined by the normal control group. This paper demonstrates that region differences in macular thickness corresponds to the location of visual field loss in glaucoma patients and may be of potential value in assessing patients with regional damage. This novel strategy warrants further investigation in glaucoma patients with other patterns of injury, and evaluation of its diagnostic efficacy in comparison to conventional imaging techniques.
