Hoffman et al. (576) present the results of their study examiningthe spatial relationship of abnormal neuroretinal rim locates between the eyes in a large heterogeneous group of ocular hypertensive patients, glaucoma suspects and patients with clear glaucomatous injury that had been examined within the Diagnostic Interventions in Glaucoma Study. Since there is significant variation within the normal optic disc, examine inter-individual asymmetry may provide valuable information regarding the risk of glaucomatous progression. The presence of abnormality within the optic disc was defined using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy with the Moorefield's Regression Analysis with the standard sectors.

Regional areas of susceptibility may be similar between the two eyes and may help identify regions of the optic nerve that may be vulnerable to further glaucomatous injury

Almost half of the eyes had similar regions of abnormality indicating that due to inter-eye similarity within an individual, regional areas of susceptibility may be similar between the two eyes and may help identify regions of the optic nerve that may be vulnerable to further glaucomatous injury. However, as mentioned by the authors, longitudinal follow-up of this cohort is required to determine the significant of these finding to the progression and/or development of glaucoma.
