Understanding retinal ganglion cell (RGC) injury in glaucoma is fundamental to the development of preservation strategies. Morquette and Di Polo (1626) review the major cellular compartments of the RGC, namely the soma, axon, dendrites and synaptic connections. This well-written article is highly relevant to glaucoma researchers and glaucoma specialists interested in the structure and function of RGCs. Dendrites are nicely highlighted in this article, with a clear description of these fine structures responsible for signal transmission at synaptic contact points. The dynamic nature of dendrites is emphasized, with a discussion of their changes during development and in neurologic disorders.
