This is an excellent paper that provides compelling evidence that pathology observed in a rat model of glaucoma induced by laser application to the episcleral veins is similar to that observed in the DBA/2 mouse glaucoma model. Soto et al. (105) show that loss of RGCs in both models occurs in sectorial patterns and that disconnected RGC bodies survive at least for some time as axonal loss starts to occur early after IOP elevation. The experimental methodology is solid, the results clear and the interpretation appropriate. This work clearly increases our understanding of the disease process in these animal models.
