  • Goldmann applanation tonometers should be re-calibrated regularly, emphasized by a prospective study of 50 tonometers indicating that 72% of instruments in an academic center did not meet the manufacturer's recommendation.
  • abnormal tau protein associated with Alzheimer's disease is also present in post-mortem human glaucoma eyes with a history of elevated intraocular pressure and optic nerve head excavation, suggesting a role for abnormal tau in glaucomatous degeneration.
  • Independent mechanisms may underlie peripapillary atrophy and disc change in glaucoma patients, a longitudinal study suggests after failing to demonstrate a relationship between peripapillary atrophy and extent or rate of disc change.
  • Glutamate appears involved in glaucomatous CNS degeneration in monkey, with increased NMDA R1 glutamate receptor in
lateral geniculate nucleus layers connected to the glaucoma eye.
  • Retinal nerve fiber layer measured by optical computed tomography (OCTIII) seems minimally affected by anatomic variations in optic disc area, axial length and refractive error in one glaucoma screening study.
  • In combination with the comprehensive clinical evaluation of the glaucoma patient, HRT evaluation provides optic nerve head information that can help to diagnose and/or monitor glaucomatous disease.
  • The self reported prevalence of glaucoma in Canada increases with age, and is approx. 11% in the over 80 years age group.
  • Barriers to managing glaucoma effectively such as non-compliance and ineffective medication administration were reported at 33% and 49% of glaucoma patients (n = 80) respectively at one institution.
  • The recent significant increase in the number of laser trabeculoplasties performed in Ontario from 2002-2004 (230% increase) coincides with the introduction of selective laser trabeculoplasty.
  • Changing the classification of angle closure glaucoma may be necessary for a better understanding of disease and to help design studies to determine optimal management strategies.
