  1. To modulate the cytoskeletal component in trabecular meshwork cells (TMC) is probably the main mechanism to increase IOP in glaucocorticoid-induced glaucoma. Rho-kinase inhibitor Y-27632 can degenerate the cytoskeletal component in (TMC), reverse the pathologic change of the cells and therefore decrease IOP in glaucocorticoid induced glaucoma. (Liu Yali, Chengdu)
  2. A study on Macaca mulattas shows that the lymph system in the bulbar conjunctiva is one of the major pathways for the outflow of aqueous humor after trabeculectomy. Besides the filter bleb, outflow can be sustained independently by way of new-grown lymph pipes or humor veins to the area of the flap of the sclera. Another possible mechanism for dysfunctional filtration is the failure of the outflow by the lymph system in the bulbar conjunctiva. (Zhu Yuan-fang, Shanghai)
  3. PT can extend significantly the existence duration of the filter bleb in rats, probably by down-regulating the expression of TGF-α2 mRNA and related protein and therefore depressing the proliferation, migration of fibroblast cells. (Ma Jian-min, Beijing)
  4. A 12-month prospective study of 24 glaucoma patients shows that phacoemulsification after trabeculectomy increased the IOP significantly, compared with the level before surgery. Phacoemulsification has little effect on the inner structure of the filter bleb. The factors of high risk of failure for the anti-glaucoma surgery include high IOP before phacoemulsification, invisible outflow pathway of aqueous chamber humor under the sclera flap and high reflection in the filter bleb in the UBM image. (Wang Xiao-zhen, Beijing)
  5. Analysis of the level of TGF-β1, ET-1 and NO in serum of patients after vitreoretinal surgery shows that TGF-β1 and ET-1 were significantly higher in glaucocorticoid-induced ocu lar hypertension (GIOH) patients. However, the level of NO was lower, compared with the control group. Further, there was significant correlation between the level of ET-1 and NO. This indicates that these three indexes are risk factors for suffering GIOH after vitreoretinal surgery. (Cheng Ming, Chongqing)
  6. Rat corneal graft was transplanted into the rat anterior chamber after the first week of trabeculectomy. ACAID (Anterior Chamber Associated Immune Defiation) was quiet in the early stage. However, when the inflammatory response of the anterior chamber was decreased, IL-10 and IL-4 in the serum and GATA-s in the spleen were increased. It indicated that ACAID restores with inflammation disappearance. (Xu Jian-ting, Shanghai)
  7. Human trabecular meshwork cells were cultured from POAG patients and normals. The ATP and ROS levels were significantly higher in POAG than in normals. This implicated that the mitochondrial function depression may originally exist in POAG patients. (He Yuan, Guangzhou)
  8. Potential difference (PD) in isolated human ciliary epithelium was studied. PD of the aqueous side can be positive or negative. Na+, K+-ATPase was found both in pigmented and non-pigmented epithelium cells. (Ling Yun-lan, Guangzhou)
  9. ATP receptor P2X7 was expressed in retinal ganglion cells. Stimulation of this receptor could cause retinal ganglion cell death, which may be mediated by the NMDA pathway. (Zhang Xiu-lan, Guangzhou)
  10. CD11b expression was seen in retinal microglial cells in the laser-induced rat chronic glaucoma model. The peak of CD11b appeared in the early stage of increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Retinal ganglion cell death was seen when IOP sustained for 2-3 months. However, the CD11b did not increase over this period, which means that the variation of CD11b may play a role in the death of retinal ganglion cells. (Yue Hong-yun, Chongqing)
